Walking on the Yorkshire Wolds - Post Xmas Walk 2013

To walk off the Christmas excess we took a walk from Wayrham Dale Car Park to Thixendale and back again. We stopped off for a pint and a warm up by the log fire in the Cross Keys at Thixendale. Here's a selection of photographs I took during the walk.

Sunday Morning Cycling on the Yorkshire Wolds

With the better weather allowing me to cycle more and build my fitness I've been venturing further across the Yorkshire Wolds. Today's ride took me up in to the higher end of the Wolds and right across to the western edge of the Wolds. The route I followed took in Huggate, Thixendale and Millington. My ride along the quiet country lanes included some fast descents and some slow very steep ascents. The ride really highlighted to me what a great place to cycle the Yorkshire Wolds is.

From time to I stopped and took some photograph's of the splendid scenery.

Yorkshire Wolds Curlew

This spring some Curlew have taken up residence in the fields around our village. Originally I'd only saw one  pair together but this evening whilst out walking the dog I saw six standing together in a field. Unfortunately they flew off before I could photograph them together however I did manage to get some pictures.

Wold Cottage Meteorite

I was quite surprised on a recent trip to the Natural History Museum to find that an event that took place on the Yorkshire Wolds has a prominent place in their collection.

The museum has a gallery that it calls Treasures and as they describe it as below -

"The Natural History Museum cares for an unrivalled collection of beautiful, rare and scientifically important items. Find out about some of our most exceptional objects and specimens, which can be found in our new Treasures Cadogan Gallery.
Discover the extraordinary stories they have to tell, about our world and the remarkable people who have helped explore and understand it."
One of the objects in the gallery that they class as a treasure is the Wold Cottage Meteorite that struck the Yorkshire Wolds near Wold Cottage, Thwing in 1795. You can read the story of the Meteorite here - http://www.nhm.ac.uk/nature-online/collections-at-the-museum/museum-treasures/wold-cottage-meteorite/index.html
A monument was erected where the meteorite struck and it still stands to this day. The Wold Cottage, the property that the meteorite takes it's name from still exists and offers bed and breakfast. It was, in fact, voted

Winner of 'Welcome To Yorkshire's'
Best Bed & Breakfast 2012.

So if you want a to explore a piece of natural history and visit the beautiful Yorkshire Wolds you could stay at the Wold Cottage. You can visit their website here -  http://www.woldcottage.co.uk/

The local pub in Thwing takes it's name from the event - "The Falling Stone"

Meandering across the Yorkshire Wolds

It was a beautiful sunny day for my Mum's birthday and I took her out for the day. We took a long drive across the Wolds taking in some of my favourite spots. Our trip also included a stop off the Robert Fuller Gallery at Fotherdale Farm, Thixendale - www.robertefuller.com/ - where I bought my mum a lovely print of a Sparrowhawk. We lunched at the Blacksmiths Arms at Westow - www.blacksmithswestow.co.uk/ - and then meandered home  taking in the scenery on warm and sunny spring afternoon.

Below are some of the photographs I took during the day. As I'd forgotten to charge the battery on my SLR camera they were taken with my mobile phone's camera.

Snow on the Yorkshire Wolds

After heavy snowfall on Friday night I took a trip out  to capture some snowy scenes in the area around Holme-on-the-Wolds.
