Sunny Spring Day at RSPB Bempton

With a midweek day off we made the most of it and the mini-heatwave by visiting the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds Reserve at Bempton. It is famed for having the only on-shore breeding colony of Gannets in England.

The reserve has a pay and display car park costing £5 for non-RSPB members (free if you are). In my view a small price for a great place to visit. A small shop cum visitor centre sits at the entrance to the reserve where helpful staff are on-hand to hand out maps and provide information. Teas and Coffees are served here as well.

Gannets at Bempton Cliffs

A path runs down from the buildings to and then along cliff top where a number of small viewing platforms have been constructed. RSPB volunteers are on hand to give advice, help with identification and information on recent sightings. 


With the sun shining and blue sky already making for a great day the birds didn't disappoint with thousands perching on the chalk cliffs and wheeling through the sky. The views of Filey and Flamborough Head didn't disappoint as well.

I've been to RSPB Bempton before and definitely will visit again. The drive up to it also gave a chance to visit some of the Northern Wolds villages such as Boynton, Grindale, Buckton and, of course, Bempton.
