Thixendale

We walked through Thixendale today and I took these photo's as we went. It's a popular village for starting walks. One well trod walk is from the village to the deserted medieval village of Wharram Percy - http://www.visitingtheyorkshirewolds.com/2011/01/1st-of-2011-thixendale-to-wharram-percy.html although you can strike out in all directions.

Refreshments can be had at the pub - http://www.thixendale.org.uk/info/Cross%20Keys/ - or teas are served in the Village Hall on a Sunday.

Close by is the recently installed turf art installation featured on Countryfile. It sits at the junction of Bradeham, Worm and Thixen Dale about a mile south of the village.

Snow and Ice on the Yorkshire Wolds

It was a very cold February morning when I took these photographs. We have a Met office recording station nearby and that was recording -11.8C. Standing snow had been frozen hard overnight making ice crystals sparkle in the light of the rising sun. Beautiful.

White Duck on Fridaythorpe Pond

We'd walked in the snow from Huggate to Fridaythorpe and sat on the bench by the pond to have a warming cup of tea. A small corner of the pond was unfrozen and about 20 Mallards were swimming around on it. Amongst them was a solitary white duck.
